A Cleaner Starting Point for S-Log2 Footage
Sony’s S-Log2 profile is designed to capture maximum dynamic range, which means footage appears extremely flat and desaturated straight out of the camera. Before creative grading can begin, the image needs to be transformed into a standard color space like Rec.709.
The Cinecolor S-Log2 LUT performs this conversion with a more balanced approach, creating a natural Rec.709 image that is easier to work with in post-production.
Instead of pushing contrast or saturation aggressively, the LUT prioritizes neutral color balance and consistent skin tones, giving editors and colorists a stable foundation for grading.
Sony’s built-in S-Log2 conversion LUT can work well in certain situations, but many editors notice subtle color shifts and skin tone issues when using it as a starting point.
Common issues include:
-
Slight magenta or green color bias
-
Skin tones that feel unnatural
-
Contrast that can be overly aggressive
The Cinecolor S-Log2 LUT addresses these issues by using a modified color balance designed to produce more natural color and a more neutral Rec.709 conversion.
The result is a technical conversion that behaves more predictably during the grading process.
